You do too much lifting the day before or got a little to aggressive at sports the previous day and your back will probably hurt a little. For people with the occasional back pain there are pills, ointments, and gels that will work to help get rid of the pain. You can even slap on a heating pad for a few minutes and your pain will probably disappear. But if you suffer from chronic back pain then you are probably already very aware of the lack of an effective chronic back pain treatment.

When you have chronic back pain for any reason you soon come to realize that you will more than likely be living with it the rest of your life. There are exercises you can do to help strengthen parts of your back and combat chronic back pain but the reality is when the weather changes, or there is a drop in the barometric pressure, your back pain will flair up and remind you that you are still injured and all the exercise in the world is not going to help. It would be almost easier to accept if chronic back pain just limited itself to your back but it does not. Whether you have damaged discs or muscle spasms in your back the chances are your back pain likes to affect more than just your back.

If you have damaged the discs in your back then you probably notice that when your chronic back pain flairs up that your leg hurts and your ankle on that leg hurts as well. Which leg hurts depends on which side your discs are bulging out on. If your discs bulge out on the left side then your left leg and ankle will hurt. Vice versa for the right side. It is almost easy to deal with your chronic back pain when you are trying to deal with the leg symptoms as well. It almost seems sometimes like the pain down your leg is more than in your back. As you can see chronic back pain is not fun.

The Stiffness Really Happens

You have probably seen people on television complaining that their chronic back pain is causing their back to stiffen up after a certain amount of activity. That is not a Hollywood fable, that chronic back pain stiffness is very real and very painful. It feels like someone has inserted a board in your back and you cannot bend your spine. It can hurt a great deal but it is more frightening than anything else as you honestly begin to think you cannot bend your spine anymore.

The reality is that living with chronic back pain is painful and a sometimes frightening experience. Do what you can to take care of your back and do whatever you can to avoid having to live with chronic back pain.

Advice On Preventing Chronic Neck Back Pain

How many times in your life have you suffered an injury when you did something right after someone suggested that you not do that thing because you will get hurt? In many cases that is how neck back pain starts. The best way to prevent chronic neck back pain is to avoid any chronic back pain cause that you come across in an average day. The best thing to remember when it comes to chronic neck back pain is that it does not take much to trigger that horrible pain but it can take weeks, even months, to get rid of it. If you make the wrong move or over exert yourself too much when you know you shouldn’t then you are setting yourself up for chronic neck back pain that you will be living with for quite a while. Even the old excuse of sleeping wrong is a legitimate way of getting neck back pain. The key here is to avoid situations that you know will cause you chronic neck back pain. Lifting something too heavy can cause it, turning your head quickly from one side to the other can cause it, or something as simple as lifting your head at an awkward angle can all cause chronic neck back pain. If you listen to that inner voice, or even someone else’s outer voice, that tell you to avoid something because it will cause chronic neck back pain then you should be okay.

As much as people do not like to admit it age is a factor in the ability to contract chronic neck back pain. The older you get the less likely you are to be as limber as you used to be. Sudden movements or activities like lifting or sports that you used to be able to do in your younger days could cause serious chronic neck back pain as you get older. If you insist on engaging in these activities then the only advice is that you need to stretch a lot before you begin and try to once again avoid situations that you know will cause you chronic neck back pain.

A Muscle Or Even A Disc

Usually chronic neck back pain is caused when you pull a muscle in your neck, tear a muscle in your neck, or contract damage to the discs in your spine where the spine meets the skull to create your neck. It can be some of the most horrendous pain you have ever experienced and, as was mentioned, it can take a very long time to relieve that pain. A pinched nerve in your neck can also cause chronic neck back pain. With so many potential causes it makes sense to visit your doctor if you start to experience any pain in your upper back, shoulders, or neck so that your doctor can recommend a proper treatment for you.

Ridding Your Back of Pain Caused From Stress

Stress can be to back pain what a case of the sniffles can be to the common cold. It is almost a symbiotic relationship in a most evil way to the human body. Stress can cause back pain in both the lower and upper part of the spine, and the results can literally floor you. This is not the kind of surprise you want to hang around for, but rarely do you get the chance to refuse.

Many television viewers may recall the predicament “Sex and the City” attorney Miranda was left in after mounting stress and a fight with gal pal Charlotte over the telephone caused her neck to wrench painfully. The more she moved, the worse she felt until finally ending up on the bathroom floor and clutching her rug. The back pain that stress causes can reverberate throughout the body, affecting just about everything.

Just Say No: To Stress Causing Back Pains

Are there ways to prevent stress from causing back pain? Absolutely! It is never too late to begin distressing your life and body. If you are currently grappling with back pain caused from stress, then consider making an appointment with a chiropractor or massage therapist. Depending on how sever your pain is, it may be advisable to see both. Check with your medical health insurance company as chiropractor visits are sometimes covered. You may even be able to receive information and a referral to a local massage therapist.

The chiropractor may also be able to assist you in learning a few helpful back pain exercises to work out the built up tension in your muscle tissue. A deep tissue massage would not only release the stress that is stored up in your muscles, but is also a great way to pamper yourself. Being good to your body like that is one very good way to eliminate extra stress in your life.

Exercise is important to reducing stress in the body and staying healthy in general. Anything from a leisure morning walk to a weekly work out routine at your local fitness center will go a long way in keeping injuries and stiffness caused by too much stress to a minimum. Back pain caused by stress does not have to afflict you. There are ways to avoid having to carry the burden of this rather painful problem. Yoga is a very popular form of exercise that increases muscle strength as it calms and works out stress.

What To Expect From Chronic Back Pain Treatment

When people experience chronic lower back pain the first thing they do is consult with their family doctor. Your family doctor acts as the quarterback for your chronic back pain treatment. Your family doctor has a very good understanding of back problems but not a detailed approach like a specialist will have. If you come to your family doctor with chronic back pain treatment, and it persists for a while, then the first thing your doctor will do to try and help you deal with the pain is prescribe pain killers for you. These are pills like loratabs that can help you deal with the pain but are really not an effective long term chronic back pain treatment.

The problem with pain killers is that they can be very addicting. Most people find that a continued exposure to that sort of chronic back pain treatment results in an addiction that can be difficult to kick. Other people can only use the loratabs when they are in pain and then not use them any other time. But as a chronic back pain treatment pain killer pills are not a great long term option and they can result in more issues than they cure. Although they do take away the pain they can bring about a very difficult addiction time for the patient that can be even more painful that the back pain.

Another popular chronic back pain treatment is shots into the back. Usually doctors will use some sort of steroid for this chronic back pain treatment and this type of treatment is painful. The doctor has to get the needle as close to your spine as possible and it is impossible for the doctor to not hit a few nerves on the way to the spine. The needle is four to five inches long and the process is usually pretty short. But for that period of time that the needle is in you there is tremendous discomfort. The worst part is that many people say the shots in the back are possibly the least effective chronic back pain treatment available.

It Really Is About Health And Exercise

The first thing any specialist will do, regardless of how much pain you are in, is send you to a physical therapist to develop a regiment of exercise that will help you strengthen your back and deal with your pain. This is possibly the most effective treatment but it takes a long time for you to feel the effects. Another thing you can do to help your chronic back pain treatment is lose weight if you are overweight. The excess weight is causing extra pressure on your damaged back and removing that extra weight will reduce the pain.

Finding the Right Back Pain Exercise

When you are suffering from lower back pain one thing that you are always on the look for is immediate relief. However in the course of looking for immediate relief you should always be getting ongoing advice and treatment on how to eventually stop the pain. Unfortunately back pain is not something that can be taken care of overnight. There are many things you need to do in order to get your back pain under control and eventually even eliminate it.

One of the things you need to do is to develop exercises for lower back pain. Many people would wonder at the logic of back pain exercise. It would seem logical that if you are having back pain then the last thing you want to put your back through is back pain exercise. But in almost all cases your back experiences a certain amount of physical damage, and even trauma that causes your back pain.

When you are off your feet to try and relieve your back pain while you recover the muscles in your back experience a certain level of atrophy. The point behind a good back pain exercise program is that the only thing that will help reduce or eliminate your back pain is to strengthen the muscles in your back so that they can hold everything together and keep everything in place.

It sounds painful but a good back pain exercise program is a gradual thing that will, if done properly over time, eliminate your back pain or at least help to get it under control. A properly executed back pain exercise program can take at the minimum weeks, or at the maximum years, to achieve its final results but to avoid surgery on your back you should stick with your back pain exercise and give the exercise a chance. The last thing you want is back surgery. In many cases people wind up worse off after surgery than they were before it.

Always Listen To Qualified People

In order to develop the proper back pain exercise program you must get your program from certified professionals. In most cases your doctor will send you to a physical therapist who will slowly develop a back pain exercise program for you based exclusively on your condition. No two back issues are the same and no two back pain exercise programs are the same either. Always follow your therapists advice and stick with your back pain exercise program no matter how painful it may be or how futile it may seem. In the end your patience will be rewarded with less back pain.

Causes And Treatments Of Severe Chronic Back Pain

Severe chronic back pain is a different kind of back pain. This is because it can affect the legs of the individual who suffers from it. This burning sensation is uncomfortable to say the least and can haunt an individual for a long time.

Cause Of Severe Chronic Back Pain

Severe chronic back pain is the kind of pain that doctors call nociceptive pain. This kind of pain is usually caused by some injury or trauma which is outside of the nervous system. This means that the damage is not in the nervous system but in the tissue itself. One cause of severe chronic back pain is arthritis but there are also other causes which may be results of a long time injury or condition.

In most cases of severe chronic back pain, the pain can be unbearable since movement is restricted. As one gets older, the pain may become worse. Some individuals may need the help of medication and drugs to ease the discomfort and pain. While many others would like to have more natural means of getting rid or even easing the pain, not all natural means may have the desired results, thus making medication and drugs an option.

Treating Chronic Back Pain

The initial step to treating severe chronic back pain is to ease into physical movement. Although, the majority of the affected area is purely muscle, the pain felt by the individual may be more painful than what others may think. Muscle pain can actually be debilitating because the back is a part of the body that we use to hold our upper body up. This puts a lot of stress on the back thus creating severe back muscle pain when we do not hold the correct posture.

Causes Of Severe Back Muscle Pain

There are many different causes of severe back muscle pain. Since the term back muscle pain is so broad, the entire back is included in this classification. So whether it be the upper or the lower back, the pain that one feels when you strain your muscles there is called back muscle pain.

Muscle strain is one of the main causes of severe back muscle pain in people. As cited above, the back holds up our upper body, thus it is actually straining itself even without us telling it to hold up the body. This involuntary movement of holding up the body can be strenuous on the part of our back. Severe back muscle pain is to be expected if we do not take care of ourselves, especially when it comes to posture and bone density.

Treatments

Depending on what kind of severe back muscle pain you might be experiencing, the treatment varies. Back pain can be quite easy to treat as long as it is only on the part of the muscles and has nothing to do with underlying condition like diseases and other types of illnesses. One of the best treatments for any kind of muscle pain is a massage that will soothe and relax tensed muscles. Severe back muscle pain can be eased or even alleviated with massages combined with applications of warm compresses.

Warm compresses help to increase blood circulation to the affected area and also help to relax the muscles. For many athletes, a combination of an ice cold bath and then a warm massage can help to relax muscles. Severe back muscle pain is something that many athletes get dependent on what sport they excel in.

Treating severe back muscle pain is essential for the health and mobility of the individual. There are many different ways to treat severe back muscle pain and there is also an alternative to take medication to help ease the discomfort.

What Is An Effective Exercise To Relieve Back Pain?

Any time your doctor recommends that you get exercise to relieve back pain or any exercises to help back pain you should always get an exercise to relieve back pain regiment from a trained professional. In most cases a physical therapist or a chiropractor would be sufficient to give you an exercise to relieve back pain regiment that will help over time.

But what exercises can you expect to have to do as an exercise to relieve back pain? It is always a good idea to have a clue as to what kinds of exercises you may be required to do so that you know what you will be in for. Remember that in the end the right exercise to relieve back pain program is something your therapist will put together for you. These are just descriptions of exercises you may be doing and why you are doing them.

Your therapist may prescribe a squatting exercise as an exercise to relieve back pain. The point of the squatting exercise is to strengthen the muscles at your lower back and above your backside. These muscles are critical to keeping your back strong and this exercise to relieve back pain is very effective and as long as you keep up this exercise to relieve back pain program you will start to notice a difference within a few weeks.

The Partial Push Up

Another exercise to relieve back pain that your therapist may have you do is to lie on the floor, or any hard surface, and push your upper body up while keeping your legs flat on the ground. Some variations of this exercise to relieve back pain have you either doing slow repetitions of this exercise or they have you pushing up and then holding that position for a short while.

In some cases you may be asked to angle your body depending on what parts of your spine are affected. The point of this exercise is to help realign your discs and relieve pain temporarily. If these are done as prescribed, and as often as prescribed, then you will find that these do indeed relieve pain and can also lend to pain relief in the long run.

Whatever exercise to relieve back pain you are given by your therapist to do you should do exactly as prescribed as much as they tell you to do it. It takes a while to start feeling the effects but if you do as your therapist says then you may be able to avoid surgery and you may be able to get rid of the pain that bothers you.

Finding The Common Ground: Understanding Causes of Back Pain

People suffering from common causes of back pains are topping the charts and spilling over. It has become an epidemic; studies show approximately seventy-five percent of every adult on this planet will experience back pain to some degree. Sadly, this is almost certainly unavoidable. If you can walk and function, work and play then you may fall prey to the common back ache at some point in your life.

It seems that no occupation or pastime is safe from the possibility of painful oohs and aahs from bending over for too long, or reaching just a smidge too far during that tennis match. Golfers also complain of jabs and twinges from over swinging. Who knew gold could be so dangerous? There are a few common causes of back pain that all people should be aware of in order to avoid injury to their spine and spinal muscles.

Know Thyself (And Thy Back)

To understand the common causes of back pain, it would be a good idea to understand the back itself. Thirty-three vertebrae and more than thirty muscles make up the spine; including a number of ligaments, inter-vertebrae discs, and a few joints. This isn’t something that nature just slapped together. Your back is an intricate network of tissues, nerves, and sturdy bones that must be kept in good condition to continue working properly. Even light exercise can be very helpful.

Muscles can certainly stretch, but this does not make you Mr. Fantastic. One of the most common causes of back pain is muscular or lumbar strain and ligament sprain. Stress can also cause back pain like this, where it feels like a pulled muscle. The best thing to do is to try and relax as much as possible, and also look into scheduling a visit with a chiropractor. Strains and sprains need more TLC than anything else; a lot of rest, an ice pack, and plenty of water to flush out any impurities in your tissue.

Osteoporosis is more common a cause of back pain than many people realize. Your bones lose calcium as you get older, making them weak and vulnerable to fracture. No one wants a broken back. This condition, along with arthritis attacks the framework of the spine; if the frame is weakened, then the entire structure can collapse. Check with your doctor about adding calcium supplements to your daily regimen in order to maintain healthy and strong bones.

Severe Back Pain Treatment Methods

Back pain is one of the different aches and pains that usually affect everybody. That is why there are varied choices for severe back pain treatment all over the world. The different kinds of severe back pain treatment methods are dependent on what part of the world they originate and what culture they belong to. In spite of these factors, there are severe back pain treatment methods that stand out as effective. These treatment methods are usually natural methods which do not call for any ingestion of medication and drugs unless the back pain is caused by an underlying condition or disease.

There are many conditions which may result in a manifestation of severe back pain. These conditions, which are different from mechanical problems or injuries, are usually the basis of the back pain. Back pain is the symptom of these conditions which is why severe back pain treatment may work sometimes but in most times the natural methods might not take effect at all. Severe chronic back pain may have an underlying condition which may need the consultation of a doctor for the proper diagnosis.

Compresses

Both warm and cold compresses work effectively as forms of severe back pain treatment. Warm compresses are usually more effective than the cold compresses especially if there is no swelling to bring down. In fact, moist heat, like a warm soak in the tub or wet, warm compresses are quite effective as a severe back pain treatment. Doctors do recommend not to overdo the moist heat treatment because too much of the warm compresses and soaking can tire one out and even drain one's strength.

Massages

Deep tissue massages are great as severe back pain treatment. There are actually many different kinds of massages that might fit with the way you want to be massaged. Some forms of massage have hot stone treatment to relax and relieve muscle stress, this may work well for those experiencing back pain. While other forms of massage focus on aromatherapy and essential oil treatment. These are highly effective as severe back pain treatment methods also. Some massages from different cultures integrate stretching and other methods to have a more effective relaxation therapy.

Finding the right kind of severe back pain treatment is essential for those who may continually suffer from back pain due to stress and work. The treatment that fits you well is something that you might want to have often since this is the one that works best for you.

Three Steps To Easing Severe Lower Back Pain

If you have severe lower back pain, you know how debilitating it can be. It can make it almost impossible to do anything, and you can only think about how much it hurts.

In the old days, they used to put a person on bed rest for a few weeks, or suggest operating on the back. Unfortunately, while doctors meant well, these suggestions were the worst possible ways to treat the severe lower back pain. The muscles atrophy and the body loses mobility. Now, there are different recommendations to treat lower back pain, whether severe or moderate.

Treatments Better Than Surgery

First of all, when the back begins to hurt it is wise to apply a cold compress to the back. This can reduce pain and inflammation, and help maintain mobility in the back. An easy way to do this is to use a bag of ice or frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel. This ice can be applied several times during the first day, for up to twenty minutes at a time. After a couple of days of cold treatment, heat can be used, like with a rice sack or heating pad. This treatment can relax the muscles and increase the flow of blood to the injured area, promoting healing. A warm bath can also be soothing.

Bed rest can be used, but not alone and not for extended periods. In studies, it has been found that continuing activities without bed rest after back pain can help the back maintain flexibility. Also, it was found that bed rest alone could make the lower back pain more severe and lead to other complications (like blood clots in legs, depression and loss of muscle tone). It is much better to get back to regular activities as soon as possible. At night or while resting, lie on one side with a pillow between the knees, or on the back with a pillow under the knees.

Exercise! Particularly before it becomes severe lower back pain. Exercise will strengthen the back and abdominal muscles, and that is the key. Generally doctors recommend stretching exercises, walking and swimming. Yoga can also help by stretching the muscles and strengthening the body. Usually, a bit of exercise is a great lower back pain treatment, but if the pain increases, stop exercising and consult your medical practitioner.

Many people find relief of moderate to severe lower back pain by visiting a chiropractor. A chiropractor is trained in the ways to adjust the body and manipulate the spine to fix misalignments that can lead to lower back pain.

Medicines are often heavily relied on to treat severe lower back pain. Sometimes, the medical practitioner will recommend a combination of over-the-counter and prescription drugs. Be sure to check with your doctor to know that they are safe for you.

Common Drugs To Combat Severe Lower Back Pain

Analgesics (like aspirin or ibuprofen), are taken orally, and help reduce inflammation. Counter-irritants (applied as a spray or cream) stimulate the nerve endings on the skin to feel warm or cold, and dull the pain. Topical analgesics can also reduce inflammation and help with blood flow. Antidepressants can be used to dull the pain and elevate the person’s mood.

Opioids – like codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone and morphine – should only be used for the most severe lower back pain, and only for a short amount of time, while under a doctor’s care. These have many side effects, making this less ideal for treating back pain than some other options.

Finding Out What Causes Back Pain

The phrase “a pain in the neck” has been a well known pop culture saying for a few generations, and is generally associated with being considered an annoyance to another person. There was a time when the worst thing you could be to someone was a pain in the neck. What about being a pain in the back? Would this be considered worse or not as bad? For the many millions of people a day who have to deal with some degree of spinal discomfort, being “a pain in the back” would make you a Hulk sized pest.

Chronic back problems are not anything new under the sun. A lot of time and money have been invested over the year to determine what causes back pain and how it can be fixed, and even avoided. Doctors have unearthed quite a few common causes of back pain. Fortunately most of the time, all that is required is a pain reliever and some days of rest to have you back on your feet.

Time To Know Your Stuff

There are plenty of reading materials and articles through web sites on the internet to study up on what causes back pain. What doctors suggest causes back pain most of the time is overextending and overusing your back muscles, resulting in lumbar strains and pulls. This is especially frequent when engaging in sports activities. It may sound a little funny when you are cautioned to “lift with your legs,” but not adhering to that tidbit of advice could land you in some hot water and a slipped disc.

Sometimes what is causing the back pain is an iceberg; the pain is actually a symptom of something bigger that normally cannot be seen with the naked eye. The exception, of course would be a weapon or large object actually protruding from your spine. That would hurt. But in most cases, any internal back pains should be checked out by a physician. Bladder and kidney infections have often been detected early because the patient scheduled a doctor visit to find out what the cause of their back pain was.

Self diagnosis to try and figure out what causes back pain should only be a preliminary checklist to make for your doctor; do not attempt to be your own physician. As well as you may know your own body, you can still miss something. There may be other symptoms that you are not concentrating on because they do not have anything to do with your spine. Always get a second opinion from someone with a medical degree.

Lower Back Pain Symptoms – The Three S’s You Should Know

When it comes to lower back pain symptoms, it helps to know the causes. While the solution may be the same regardless of the cause, for some causes there are other options for relief. Some are temporary other offer more permanent relief.

The lower back has bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles and disks. There can be problems with any of these things. And in some people, no certain cause is ever found. In those cases, relief is freedom from pain.

The First S – Strains

The most common reason for lower back pain symptoms is damage caused by heavy lifting, a sudden movement that jerked the back a certain, awkward, way or strained muscles or ligaments. A muscle spasm can also give one lower back pain symptoms.

The Second S – Structural Issues

There are some structural things that can cause lower back pain symptoms. These include: sciatica, bulging or ruptured disks, osteoporosis and skeletal irregularities of the spine such as scoliosis, and arthritis.

Sciatica is caused by a disk in the spine pressing on a main nerve that runs the length of the leg. It is felt as a sharp, shooting, pain, usually running through the buttock and down the leg. Sciatica can be felt as very severe lower back pain. Disks that are not performing the way they should can cause a lot of lower back pain symptoms. Disks in the spine are supposed to be the cushions between the vertebrae. If the disk bulges or ruptures it can push on a nerve and be very painful.

Osteoporosis is a disease where the bones are brittle and porous. This can lead to compression fractures of the vertebrae, leading to more pain in the lower back. If the spine curves in a different way, it can cause lower back pain symptoms. One condition where the spine curves to the side is scoliosis. If the spine curves too much in any of its curves, it can cause back pain.

With arthritis, there can be many lower back pain symptoms if the person has spinal stenosis. This is caused by arthritis in the spine, narrowing the space for the spinal cord. Arthritis can also be in the hips, hands and knees. All of these conditions, once diagnosed, can be treated appropriately.

The Third S – Serious

There are a few rare yet serious conditions that can lead to lower back pain symptoms. If there is a tumor on the spine, it can push against a nerve and cause back pain. If there is an infection in the spine, one will have a fever and warmth in the area of the pain. Finally, there is a neurological problem that can affect the nerve roots for the legs and lower back. With this condition (cauda equine syndrome) there will be weakness in the legs, loss of bowel and/or bladder control, and numbness in the saddle or groin area.

Lower Back Muscle Pain – The Five W’s And An H

There is nothing more invasive on our daily lives than suddenly having lower back muscle pain. It can be anything from a twinge to a debilitating attack, leaving us wanting to die. Let’s take a look at the answers to six pertinent questions.

Who Gets Lower Back Muscle Pain?

Almost everyone. Studies show that four out of five of us will have back pain at some time in our lives. Fortunately, for most the lower back pain symptoms are comparatively mild, and we can still function in our lives. But for a few, it is worse, almost debilitating.

What Are The Types Of Lower Back Muscle Pain?

There are two primary types of muscles injuries in the lower back that can causes pain, strains and sprains. The stretching or tearing of the actual muscle fibers causes a muscle strain. This type of injury is also called a pulled muscle. It can happen from not warming up the muscles before expecting hard work from them, because the muscle is too weak or because the muscle was already damaged and not allowed to heal thoroughly.

A sprain of the muscle happens when the ligaments, the fibrous tissue that connects bones to each other, are torn from where they attach. Generally, the ligaments are very tough, but sudden movement like twisting a certain way can sprain the ligaments.

Both types of injury are similar and both the symptoms and treatments are similar as well. Consequently, knowing exactly which type of injury you are dealing with isn’t important, just treat it. However, a muscle strain is far more likely than a sprain in the lower back.

When Can I Get Out Of Bed?

In the past, doctors recommended bed rest for those suffering from a lower back muscle pain. Now, however, research has shown that lying in bed more than a couple of days can aggravate the problem, as the muscles atrophy and grow stiff. So, while you may want to rest more than just two or three days, be prepared to get back up and stretch out that back. Exercise is good for those muscles.

Where Will I Feel The Pain?

While all parts of the back can have muscle pain, the lower back is most common. Pain can also be within the buttock.

Why Does It Hurt So Much?

Whenever there is damage to the muscles or ligaments, like being torn or stretched beyond capacity, there will be inflammation and swelling. Sometimes there are spasms also within the soft tissues. If the body is not allowed to rest, but instead the person continues with the activity, the injury is not allowed to heal and the pain will be aggravated. It is best to let the body rest at the first sign of lower back muscle pain.

How Can I Tell If I Am Predisposed Toward Back Pain?

There are several predisposing factors for back pain. A few are scoliosis (curvature of the spine), short leg syndrome and being middle aged. If you have had a back injury before, you are more likely to have another injury. During pregnancy or other time of weight gain, your body is more vulnerable to injury. Of course, having a job where you are involved in repetitive motions (bending, twisting, stretching…) also puts one more at risk.

Digging A Little Deeper: What Are The Causes Of Lower Back Pain?

Lower back pain is a very common thorn in the side for millions of men and women all over the world. They sigh and wince, grabbing their aching backs and grumbling for what seems to be the umpteenth time. But does anyone really know what causes lower back pain? There are certainly plenty for reasons for the creaks and sharp twinges that you feel after a particularly strenuous game of tennis.

Maybe it was a sectional sofa or the solid oak entertainment center that you get talked into helping your buddy move every few years that left you bent over like a little old lady. Muscle tissue can only stretch so far before it begins to tear. This is just one of the many different situations for what causes lower back pain. The spine is both very strong and very vulnerable at the same time; it can carry a few hundred pounds of muscle and fat, but can also break down with just the slightest wrong turn.

The Back Breaking Facts Of Your Sore Spine

Figuring out the specifics of what causes lower back pain can be as simple as making a list of your daily and weekly activities. It could also require literal X-ray vision to see what is going on under the surface. You may have done more than pull a few muscles playing basketball all afternoon. You might not remember everything you did to end up hunched over in the chiropractor’s office but your body does. Muscles and nerves have a far better memory than the person in which they inhabit.

Continual injury to the same area of your back can do more than just cause lower back pain. What you may not realize is that an imbalance in your spinal column that makes you even more susceptible to future injuries. The more weakened your muscles, the easier it can be to strain them again. When it comes to the spine, this can lead to herniated discs and pinched nerves. It would not be a bad idea to find out what causes back pain problems in general.

Deformities of the spinal column like scoliosis and bone degeneration such as osteoporosis can also be what causes lower back pain. Scoliosis causes the spine to curve into an uncharacteristic S or C-shape. It is still unknown why this happens, but most cases are mild and mainly need to be observed every few months by a doctor. Severe scoliosis patients will need a brace or even surgery.

Lowering the Boom on Lower Back Pain Causes

You are going about your day when that painful twinge hits, causing you to stop short and rub that familiar area just above your hips. Lower back pain strikes again. This is something that far too many people deal with in their day-to-day routine. The cause of lower back pain can be a myriad of different possibilities, from muscle strain to sciatic nerve problems.

A proper diagnosis can be determined with a visit to the doctor’s office, and perhaps a handful of tests. When it comes to internal pain, it is better to be over cautious than do nothing. Sometimes waiting even just a few weeks can almost be too late. As the saying goes, better safe than sorry.

Iceberg Or Ice Cube?

A low back strain is a very common lower back pain cause. What happens exactly? Basically you do too much and lift too much for too long, which results in the muscle fibers in your lower back being pulled in ways they are not accustomed to. Most of the time this is not a serious injury; you will, however, need to stop your twisting and shaking for a few weeks. Be prepared to break out the ice pack and spend some quality time with your sofa.

A lumbar sprain is similar to a strain in that they are both popular causes of lower back pain. But unlike the latter, lumbar sprains can be much more painful; a sprain occurs when the ligaments are torn. Think of ligaments as the cables that keep a suspension bridge suspended. If a cable snaps, the integrity of the bridge is threatened and weakened. The symptoms of the two are so alike that it may be easier to tell the Double Mint twins apart than to nail down a diagnosis for this lower back pain cause.

For women, painful cramps during their menstrual cycle and premenstrual syndrome can be a lower back pain cause. During the latter part of pregnancy puts much added pressure on the spine and vertebrae, causing pinched nerves and quite a bit of discomfort. Endometriosis is another health issue for women that many times will be made worse by pain in the lower back area.

Exercising these muscles do aid in relieving the pain, especially for anyone whose job requires repetitive motions. Not giving your muscles a variety of movement and stretching throughout the day can also cause upper back pain. Something as simple as a few arm and back stretches in the morning could do wonders for your overall spinal health. Regular visits to your family physician are an important key in taking care of yourself.

Taking Care Of Severe Back Pain During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time in a woman's life when she experiences a lot of new and extreme things. Severe back pain during pregnancy is one of those extreme things that one can have during pregnancy. The severe back pain during pregnancy needs to be treated as naturally as possible since taking medications or drugs during pregnancy may be a risky thing.

Severe back pain during pregnancy is often caused by the added weight of the unborn child and the shift of balance that the woman experiences especially during the later part of gestation. While not all women may experience severe back pain during pregnancy, a good many will have cause to complain about it.

Natural Treatments For Severe Back Pain During Pregnancy

Severe back pain treatment for pregnant women is more effective in the form of warm compresses and massages. Warm compresses can effectively relax the strained muscles that are carrying the extra weight while massages, especially deep tissue massages, can almost always guarantee that the strained and stressed muscles are soothed and relaxed. It should be warm compresses and not hot compresses since some women's skin is sensitive especially during pregnancy thus making them susceptible to scalds.

Another way to ease severe back pain during pregnancy is to rest as much as you want especially when your back pain grows progressively worse. Give both your feet and back a rest especially during the last trimester when the baby gets heavier and bigger. You might also like to stay off the high heels starting around the end of the first trimester to avoid severe back pain during pregnancy. High heels not only add to the loss of balance when you start getting bigger but you also run the risk of tripping or falling.

Severe back pain during pregnancy can also be eased by wearing undergarments that offer support for both the back and the belly. These undergarments can help to make severe back pain during pregnancy less pronounced. Some of the undergarments offer maximum support for those who need it while others only offer light to moderate support. Many times people that suffer from chronic lower back pain are forced to deal with the condition for the rest of their lives but that does not mean that every once in a while they cannot find chronic back pain relief to help them forget just for a little while that they have their painful condition. So look for that perfectly padded but stiff surface to try and deal with your chronic lower back pain.

Light On Your Feet

One of the ways to relieve your chronic lower back pain for a short period of time that many people do not think of is swimming. You may actually want to avoid any serious swimming type activity. What really helps is being in the water and taking the pressure off your back by being able to have the water support your body. How much activity you get involved in while in the pool is up to you but like anything else to do with chronic lower back pain if you over-do it you will probably regret it.

There are some tricks to getting temporary relief from your chronic lower back pain and if you spend some time talking with your doctor chances are you will find more ways that can help give you that short period of relief that can be so sweet after struggling with the pain all day.

Some Practical and Real Life Exercises To Help Back Pain

Doctors and physical therapists all have their legal mumbo jumbo to help relieve your chronic back pain. This is because most of us are too preoccupied with our jobs that we already expose our bodies to stress. Once we experience stress, certain unexplained manifestations begin showing up – and one of the most common that we know of is back pain.

Although back pain may not be caused by stress alone, the back pain management to any cause of the manifestation is the same. The treatment only differs in terms of the severity and the degree of the back pain that you feel. For those experiencing mild to moderate pain levels, you can make use of simple home treatments to help relieve your discomfort.

Back Pain Management: Exercise

One of the best upper or lower back pain treatment is exercise. It is recommended by most doctors especially if the cause of your pain is stress. Exercise is proven to be very beneficial because it stretches your back muscles and alleviates the condition of your inflamed back. However, exercise should be done as said or as recommended by your doctors. This is most especially true for those people who are experiencing back pain because of medical conditions. As exercise is helpful, it should be taken with limitations too. Remember, too much of everything could be bad for your health as well.

Back Pain Management: Ice Pack

Ice packs as a back pain management at home are also useful and accessible whenever you start feeling the symptoms of pain. Anything cold that is applied on your skin can radiate numbness to the aching part. Ice packs, like exercise, are also recommended by doctors. This is because too much application for several hours can cause burns on your skin. Again, ice application is limited to one hour only. You can rest for thirty minutes before you start applying ice again.

Back Pain Management: Massage

Massage is also one of the best forms of back pain management that could relieve you of the pain. If massage is done properly, it can totally eliminate your back pains for a certain time. Massage can be performed at home if you ask someone to do it for you. It would also be more convenient if you visit massage shops and ask for a back therapy that would help remove the pain. If your back pains are caused by a medical condition, then it is suggested that you ask for advice from your doctors first.

All of the back pain management mentioned above can be done conveniently at home. At one way or another, it would help a lot in relieving you of the discomfort that you feel. Back pain management that does not involve the use of medications help a lot as these drugs do. You just have to try one back pain management from another and see which one works best on you.

Simple Ways That Can Give You Back Pain Relief

Back pain relief is an easy find these days. Along with rubbing her belly, which protrudes more than ever before, putting a hand to her sore back is a natural motion while pregnant.

Why Is The Back More Likely To Hurt During Pregnancy?

There are several reasons for increased lower back pain during pregnancy. First, the body produces hormones in different amounts than usual during pregnancy. One of the major hormones the body makes is called relaxin. Yes, it really is called that. It is the hormone that helps the ligaments and pelvic joints to ease up and allow the baby to get through the birth canal. But it doesn’t just relax things at the end of the pregnancy, but relaxes them throughout the pregnancy resulting in the funny waddle that pregnant women tend to do when they walk.

Also, with the uterus getting so much bigger, it changes the mother’s center of gravity. She has to be more careful when she exercises, even when walking, and get used to balancing differently. While she goes about her usual day, the ligaments holding her uterus are relaxing and pulling on her spine and muscles. These muscles are not designed to carry the extra weight of the uterus, so the spine and back muscles help with the weight. Hence, lower back pain during pregnancy! Getting moderate exercise while pregnant can help protect her from lower back muscle pain and make her more comfortable overall. Pelvic tilts, a standard exercise suggested during pregnancy, helps eliminate lower back pain, whether done while standing or while on all fours.

The mother can also avoid lower back pain while pregnant by having good posture. Obviously, having the bowling ball or watermelon out front changes her balance, but she can still stand up straight, with her shoulders back. It’s fine to have her uterus sticking out in front while she smiles and walks with pride!

If she already has a child or two, she must be extra vigilant about not picking them up using her back. She shouldn’t bend at where her waist used to be, but use her legs to lift herself down and back up instead. Same thing goes for when she picks things up off the floor (if she can’t get someone else to do it), she should squat to reach them and use her legs to get back up. This will preserve her back and protect her from lower back pain during pregnancy.

How To Ease Severe Upper Back Pain

Severe upper back pain is not as common as lower back pain. Usually, severe upper back pain is caused by some mechanical problems or an injury to the individual. There may also be some conditions that can cause severe upper back pain.

Mechanical Problems

Severe upper back pain is most often caused by mechanical problems that has something to do with the muscles that are found in the upper back, shoulders and the neck. Some mechanical problems that can cause severe upper back pain have something to do with the way you may have slept or you may have abused the muscle at some point in time such as playing too much or swinging too hard.

Severe back pain during pregnancy is also another possibility when you usually suffer from back pain. Not getting enough upper body exercises can also be a cause for severe back pain in the upper part of the back. If you think that a consultation with a trained expert is not necessary there are also some things which you can try in order to ease severe upper back pain. Ice and heat are among the primary ways to ease the discomfort brought by pain in the upper back. Experts recommend initially applying ice for the initial day that you feel the pain in your upper back. The ice must be wrapped in a towel or put in an ice pack to avoid frostbite. This treatment is especially effective if you have some swelling in your back.

Heat is another option for treating severe upper back pain. A soak in warm water at least three times a day can be very relaxing and help to ease the discomfort in the upper back. Warm compresses can be equally effective as moist heat. In fact, heat can be more effective than ice in many ways.

Massages and some rest can also be effective for treating severe upper back pain. Massage is one way of relaxing the tense or tight muscles that may be the cause of the discomfort. Deep tissue massage can also be effective enough to reach the underlying muscles that may have been tensed due to over exercising or overexertion.

Treating severe upper back pain can also be done through medication and pain relieving drugs. Drugs and medication are among the fastest ways to relive the pain in the upper back.

The Causes Of Severe Back Pain

There are several kinds of severe back pain, but the two main ones are the lower back pain and the upper back pain. These are based on the regions in which the severity of the pain is felt. There are also many different causes of severe back pain that people experience. There are actually some kinds of back pain that are not as bad or as painful and these can just be because of how you were positioned while you were sleeping or when you may have been carrying something heavy. Severe back pain is different because the pain the individual usually feels is extreme and may be debilitating.

Factors Of Severe Back Pain

The usual factors that contribute to severe back pain can be disease related or something in which the physiological aspect of your body has been affected. There are many different diseases that may have severe upper back pain or severe lower back pain as their symptoms. The other kinds of causes of back pain can be a slipped disc or pulled muscle. In most cases of physiological trauma to the back, rest is usually recommended or even an operation to fix or heal the trauma.

Conditions That May Cause Severe Back Pain

Some examples of the more common diseases that can cause severe back pain are some types of arthritis, scoliosis, kidney stones, fibromyalgia and many others. These conditions can have severe back pain as one of their symptoms and can affect the individual greatly. Some types of arthritis can affect the back, whether lower or upper back, but the more intense or severe pain usually manifests when the individual is older. The same goes for scoliosis, which is a condition where the spine is curved.

Kidney stones can cause severe back pain especially when the stones are on the move. Many people who suffer from this condition can pass out due to the intense pain that occurs. Fibromyalgia is a condition that can cause extreme fatigue in individuals and muscle pain. There are other conditions which can cause severe back pain and these vary from mechanical problems, infections and tumors, injuries and acquired diseases and conditions.

These causes of severe back pain are just examples; there are more causes of this phenomenon which may be directly or indirectly due to other conditions. Care must be taken when experiencing severe back pain and so with the medication taken to ease the discomfort.

Catching a Break in Back Pain Cause and Effect

Millions of people everyday are suffering with different types and degrees of back pain. The cause is not always easy for physicians to diagnose. The spine is the central hub for a person’s movement and nerve activity. A pinched nerve in the middle of your back can adversely and directly affect the entire lower half of your body. It is very important to correctly determine the back pain cause; if your doctor can find the needle in the spinal haystack, then treatments can be discussed and implemented.

The cause of back pain can be for many reasons; overexertion of movement and activities that leads to a pulled muscle, herniated and other disc trouble, arthritis, and even other degenerative medical problems. Sometimes these issues are easily flexible, but sometimes it is more serious and may require surgery and long term therapy.
The Usual Suspects

Probably the most common back pain cause is what is known as a lumbar muscle strain. You play one too many games of racquetball, or you lift something heavy improperly and the fast lady has sung for the day. And usually several days after the incident as well. The good news is that it will mend; take a pain reliever, use an ice pack, and take easy for a while. This is also a popular lower back pain cause, mostly from incorrect lifting.

Another culprit in back pain cause is a herniated disc. Spinal discs are like pillows that sit between the vertebrae; they are your back’s shock absorbers. Though very elastic and soft during the younger years, studies have shown that discs become more rigid as a person ages. You may have the heart and spirit of someone half your age, but your back knows the truth. Your discs are more fragile past forty years of age, and very susceptible to injury.

Osteoporosis is a major cause of back pain in older women and men. Women especially experience calcium loss as they age. The bones become thin and brittle, and can break with even minimal impact. This condition is not like arthritis in which the cartilage between bone joints is worn away, but rather the bones’ inability to retain its strength and support the body’s weight.

Many doctors liken back pain to a glacier floating in the water; it may appear to be small on top, but no one can see what is beneath the surface. The best way to avoid an even bigger injury is to schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as you feel pain. X-rays and other tests can be very helpful in determining your condition.

The Many Forms of Lower Back Pain Treatment

Lower back pain is a common manifestation found in all ages and in all countries over the world. For so many reasons, lower back pain emerges from time to time. There are those people who experience pain at mild levels while there are those people who experience back pains at their worst degrees. Because of this, a heap of experiments were made in order to find out which really works best as a back pain relief. Below are some ways which could be beneficial for your back pains.

Lower Back Pain Treatment: Heat Wrap Therapy

Exercises have been a very popular lower back pain treatment. But most of those who undergo exercise experience pain after the activity itself. There are also others who experience pain during the exercise activity itself. So to make exercises work better, the heat wrap therapy has been made to make your exercises comfortable enough for you. The pain is significantly lessened if you make use of this lower back pain treatment.

Lower Back Pain Treatment: McKenzie Therapy

McKenzie therapy is one of the latest methods used in lower back pain treatment. Many deem the therapy to be an exercise. But in reality, the McKenzie therapy is an algorithm that serves to clarify the spinal problem so it can be adequately treated. This form of lower back pain treatment is being utilized in many pain centers today. Doctors also recognize this form of treatment. However, further consultations must be made before you enter into such kind of program.

Lower Back Pain Treatment: Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is also one of the medical techniques used for lower back pain treatment. Like the medications, Prolotherapy is given through injections at the back. Most of the patients having back pains do not resort to this type of treatment because of the method at which the drug is given. Like the other treatments, the use of these injectables is also limited per doctor's order. This form of treatment would be highly effective if used together with other pain management programs.

Lower Back Pain Treatment: Electrotherapy

One of the most controversial methods of lower back pain treatment is electrotherapy; this type of remedy is recommended not for back pains alone. It can also produce beneficial results to other types of pain. An electric current is being passed on to the skin to block the nerve signals which transmit the pain. It also releases endorphins which are the body's natural pain killers. Although the use of electrotherapy is quite controversial, many have attested to the efficacy of this treatment already.

The Different Methods Of Back Pain Treatment

Back pain is a common manifestation felt by people. Whether it is caused by a medical condition or a resulting factor of stress alone, back pain can become very intolerable that you could ask for injectable pain killers to relieve you of the discomfort. So to address to this problem, several methods of back pain treatment have been developed in order to alleviate the condition of those people who are experiencing moderate to severe back pains.

The items given below are three of the most common methods of back pain treatment. They are used for those who experience back pain at mild, moderate to severe levels. Of course, you have to see a doctor first before adapting any kind of treatment given below.

Back Pain Treatment: Medications

Medications are one of the most common methods of back pain treatment. This is because it is the fastest, safest, and the most reliable technique which could take away the pain that you feel. For those who are experiencing mild back pains, the doctor usually orders the lowest forms of analgesics; and for those at the moderate level, anti inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants can be an option for the doctors. For the severe type however, injectable narcotics are given for a faster relief from pain. Those who experience back pains because of a medical condition usually suffer from intolerable pain and are given this kind of medication. By far, medications are the most effective methods of back pain treatment.

Back Pain Treatment: Exercise

Back pain management can also come in the form of exercise. For those who have medical conditions such as slip disc, many doctors prefer or suggest exercise to relieve you of the pain. The most common exercise recommended is the pilates. Through months of training on a specific exercise, one can get relieved from back pains easily. This back pain treatment does not only benefit your condition but is advantageous to your health as well.

Back Pain Treatment: Surgery

The last form of back pain treatment is surgery. If the patient can no longer tolerate the pain the he or she feels, a surgery may be performed by the doctor. Among all the other forms of back pain treatment, surgery is the one thing that can help you get rid of the pain forever. Because the medical condition itself is relieved, the back pain subsides as well. However, you need to plan this type of back pain treatment with your doctors so you can be guided and prepared well for the surgery.

Important Information About Lower Back And Hip Pain

Having lower back and hip pain is very common. At least four out of five people will have it sometime during their life. Some people tend to have more problems than others and some factors are controllable, while others are not. Learning more about lower back and hip pain is the first step towards being pain free.

Types Of Lower Back And Hip Pain

There are three categories of lower back and hip pain depending on how long your pain lasts and how often you get it. If the pain lasts less than three months, it is acute back pain. Most back pain is this type. It is easy to deal with at home and no doctor’s care is needed. Get a few days of bed rest if you like, then back on your feet and work through the pain. Exercise will help, as can analgesics.

Some people have acute pain, but it comes back again, making it recurrent. While it is annoying and frustrating to have the pain return, if you treat it carefully as before, it should go away again, hopefully forever this time.

If the lower back and hip pain last longer than three months, and your back is painful most of the time, you have chronic back pain. It would be smart to talk to your primary care physician, or you can try an alternative method, such as chiropractic care or acupuncture. Be sure to go to a qualified professional, as you don’t want to exacerbate the problem!

One exception to the not longer than three months rule would be hip and lower back pain during pregnancy. Pregnant women can have backaches off and on throughout their pregnancy, primarily due to the growing uterus and straining ligaments. But once she had delivered her baby, the back pain should ease.

What Are The Likely Causes?

Several things can cause lower back and hip pain. By far, the most common cause is a muscle strain, but it can also be sciatica, an uneven pelvis or even one leg shorter than the other. You could have flat feet, or you could have very weak muscles that don’t do an adequate job of protecting your spine. There are also other things that can cause lower back and hip pain.

What Is Piriformis Syndrome?

Piriformis syndrome is an inflammation in the piriformis muscle. This muscle is found very deep within the buttock, and it is the muscle that helps our hips to rotate. If there is tightness in the hamstring, the piriformis can become inflamed and sore, even to the outside back section of the buttock. It can swell and put pressure and inflammation on the sciatic nerve too, causing sciatica. Sitting can also aggravate this situation.

To relieve the lower back and hip pain and swelling, it is wise to use ice (wrapped in a towel for twenty minutes, several times a day). Taking an anti-inflammatory medicine will also help, if you don’t mind taking a drug to ease matters. If touch is tolerable, massage the muscle deep into the tissues. Also strengthen and stretch out the hip area, using exercises targeting the hip, lower back and hamstring muscles.

Lower Back Pain – What’s It All About?

Since four out of five of people have back pain, often lower back pain, sometime in their life, we should know what causes it and how to avoid it.

Causes Of Lower Back Pain

As we get older, our bodies tend to lose their muscle elasticity and tone, as well as bone strength. The discs in our spine lose fluid and flexibility, and they can’t cushion the vertebrae as well anymore. Aging is one reason we get lower back pain.

If the muscles or ligaments in the back have a spasm, sprain or strain, the discs in the spine can rupture or bulge. That puts a lot of pressure on the nerves that are based in the spinal cord. When there is compression or irritation in those nerve roots, the back complains by giving us pain. What causes the back spasm, sprain or strain? Usually some form of trauma or injury, for example attempting to lift something too heavy, or overstretching.

Degenerative diseases like arthritis or osteoporosis can also cause lower back pain. Other potential factors are congenital abnormalities in the spine, viral infections and irritation to the joints and discs.

Some life conditions can also contribute to lower back pain. These include smoking, obesity, pregnancy weight gain, poor physical condition, stress, poor posture and poor sleeping position. Oftentimes, lower back and hip pain go hand in hand. If the body has scar tissue from previous injuries, buildup in the area can, over time, weaken the back and contribute to more serious injuries.

When To Worry About Lower Back Pain

If your lower back pain in accompanied by some other symptoms, it is time to take things more seriously and consult your primary care physician. The symptoms to watch out for include fever, pain while coughing, loss of bladder control or bowel control, progressive weakness in legs. These can indicate a pinched nerve or similar situation. If a person has diabetes, back pain can be related to neuropathy.

Avoiding Lower Back Pain

If you take proper care of your back in your day-to-day life, you can avoid lower back pain. If the back pain is recurring, there is a good chance it is from poor body mechanics. Be sure to have correct posture and to lift with your legs (instead of using your back), as well as strengthening your back with exercises. Be sure that your workplace follows healthy ergonomics, planning ahead by having furniture and tools and such to avoid injury, as this can protect the body from lower back pain.

Surgery May Not Be The Right Treatment For Back Pain

It used to be that if a person had a lot of back pain their doctor would recommend surgery to fix the problem. Following the surgery, the person would usually be on bed rest for a few weeks, and then, if all went well, their back would be better - unless it wasn’t. In the past, experts agree, there was too much back surgery done. Most people weren’t any better after the surgery, and many were worse.

Now, research has shown that most back pain, even lower back pain, will resolve itself without surgery, given rest and time. In fact, for most back pain, all other options should be tried prior to scheduling surgery on the back. Less than one percent of all people ever actually need surgery for their back pain, though four out of every five people have back pain at some time in their life.

Who Needs Surgery?

Generally, physicians believe that surgery should only be considered if other methods have been tried and were unsuccessful at relieving the back pain (or the pain returns), the pain is significantly affecting a person's day-to-day life, or if left alone the back condition could deteriorate into a more serious state.

Non-Surgical Treatments

Physical therapy can be a great way to help the back and spine heal. Along with special, specific exercises, often the physical therapist will use other modalities, such as heat or cold therapy (reduces inflammation, pain and muscle spasms), ultrasound (uses sound waves to head and encourage circulation and reduces inflammation, pain and muscle spasms), massage, spinal traction, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) (uses a painless electrical currently on certain nerves to relieve pain and improve mobility of the back) and water therapy.

Some patients find relief by using medication to relieve their back pain. There are many kinds, some over the counter and others prescription. They include muscle relaxants, analgesics and NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

Spinal injections can relieve pain and help the doctor determine the reason for the back pain. Two kinds are Facet Joint Injections and Epidural Steroid Injections. Spinal injections are not used alone, but are used along with physical therapy and exercise. They should always be recommended or prescribed by your doctor.

Often, chiropractic care can help relieve back pain. They can palpate, apply pressure, manipulate, massage and use other methods to re-align the vertebrae of the spine.

Other methods for dealing with back pain are considered alternative medicine. They include acupuncture, certain herbal medicines and biofeedback. If you use one of these therapies, be sure to have a reputable practitioner.
